How are their questions different/similar to mine? What can I do to make my research question the best one possible?

Finally, after you've read through each question carefully, respond to AT LEAST one of the questions that most interests you. Be respectful, first and foremost; then, let your classmate know what you liked about their research question, what they can do to improve their question, and how their question is similar/different to your own.

DEADLINE: please have YOUR question posted NO LATER than 10pm on Thursday, October 2ALL responses to questions should be posted by 10pm on Saturday, October 4th, no exceptions.

    1. Hi Paula,
I would re-frame this question to focus on research, like this: What do UTPA students think about research? How do UTPA students react to when research goes well? What do they do when research goes bad or is difficult?

    1. I find your question quite interesting. I would definitely enjoy reading your essay when it's finished because that's a really good question to ask. I hate going to college and I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way. It's irritating to know there's multiple people that have made it into jobs due to experience or other factors. I know people that don't have degrees but have insane money while some have degrees but can't find jobs because they don't have enough experience as the others. It's like some of us get lucky and some of don't and that's frustrating. What's the point of going to school and not being guaranteed a job once you've graduated. All this time wasted that we could've been doing something else. Our questions are completely different. The reason I picked you question was because it caught my attention instantly.

    2. Long question, so let's make it a bit more compact and give it some context. How about this: For law enforcement, which is more important: a degree or experience? What are the benefits of a degree in CJ? What are the benefits of experience in the field? In the end, what do UTPA CJ students have to say about this?

  4. How do different cultures define our thought of a good and a bad student?

    1. I found your question to be very interesting because I once read an article in High School that talked about the suicide rate in Japan was high, due to social pressures, in both the workplace and school. It was because their culture holds very clear and high standards for their families success. What they considered to be a "bad" student was what I considered an average student, and what is thought of as a "good" student in my house hold. So I definitely think culture plays a big part in someones definition of what a good or bad student is.

    2. This interjection about cultural prospective really fascinates me. With the connectivity of orthodox in society and the premise of perfection, students in the west hemisphere are perceived as permissive students while the east hemisphere are viewed as fiscal students and are disciplined till perfection. The culture of where students are brought upon their education truly does play a main role in the mindset of students due to the cultural perception on how much disciplined should be impacted on youth, in which the discipline varies due to, in my opinion, religious beliefs; therefore, the contrast between a "good" and "bad" student begins to emerge.

    3. Excellent question, Denise. I would suggest you only focus on good or bad student, not on both. If you think about it, no matter which construct you choose, you will still have room to discuss the other. This question lends itself to some solid primary research (interviews, surveys, etc.) Look forward to seeing what you find out!

    1. I liled the part of your question that unites English and writing and it is linked to your major and our class. I believe to make your question more linked to our class you can ask about what type of writing is necessary for a speech therapist im order for their work/research to be successful. Your question is similar to mine on the fact that your question revolves around a thought, will writing really improve being a good speech therapist? While mine includes the thoughts of the students. -Denise Martinez

    2. Good. Consider following questions as well: Why are note taking skills so important to the speech therapy field? What do UTPA speech therapy students have to say about the importance of notetaking in their field? In the end, what are the strategies these students should develop in order to be the best notetakers possible?

    1. I liked your question, because mostly in our age group a lot of people procrastinate on most things. Procrastination is very common and a lot of times it affects the finished product. For me, procrastination is a very bad habit that I need to break because it makes me forget the deadline of the project or work that needed to be done.

    2. This question interests me because I do not believe I know how to study well. A discussion you may include in your essay could be about the various study habits that different people have. By being aware about different methods you will be able to expand your study habits and therefore improve your learning capabilities. This question is similar to mine because both questions involve certain habits. Yours involves study habits, mine involves procrastination, which tends to become a habit we commit on a regular basis.

      Delete
    3. Your questions is interesting because I believe that a lot of students including myself, don't know how to study efficiently. There isn't just one specific way to study. Everybody learns differently and everybody needs to take the time to find out how it is exactly that they learn to be able to apply it to their studying habits. Your question in relatable to mine in the way that studying and learning is a necessity in most if not all careers in one way or another.

  15. Should students question their instructor's teachings?

    1. I think that students should be able to question their instructors teachings. Just how they are capable of questioning their students on what they have learned to get an insight on their progress, students should be able to question their instructors teaching to challenge themselves and get a better understanding on what their instructor is trying to teach.

      Delete
    2. This question interest me the most because teachers/professors are not always right, we as students can go beyond a teachers teaching. As we learn from them, they can learn from us. Sometimes we can be confused about what their teaching, we dont fully understand the material. I had this math teacher in high school well he didnt know how to teach so my effect was not learning anything and failing. So in my opinion yes, its ALWAYS important to question your instructors teaching.

      Delete
    3. I really like this question because I think it is extremely important for students to question their teachers. It provokes deeper thought and we as students automatically assume everything they tell us is right. It is essential that we question facts because we are vulnerable if we don't learn the truth.

    4. Excellent, but let's specify: How/why should students at UTPA question what they are being taught in classrooms?

    1. This questions reminds me lives in school. Every year it was TAKS this and that. What we really did was review a test before taking the actual test. There was no real teaching other than you need this for TAKS. All in all you'd still forget it by the next year, so did we really ever learn anything. In my opinion if you study to learn you will pass. They go hand in hand.

      Delete
    2. This question is very interesting because a lot of students ask themselves this question. For example we study only when we have a test coming up. The teacher usually tells us what to study which is mainly what is going to be on the test. Not everyone studies out of no where. Very little students do though. In my opinion it depends on what kind of student you are and how you see school. Some students want to study to learn the material and others would just study to just pass and it over with.
      -Marissa Valdez

    3. I like this question because it reminds me of how I used to study in high school. Everything was based on studying for the TAKS and AP exams. We never learned things that would be helpful to us in the long run, only the stuff we needed for that year. I'd say that students should be studying to learn not to just pass the semester. -Yajaira B. Garcia

    1. This questions interests me both because i have the same construct and because this is similar to another one of my questions. I think that procrastination could be tedious with people in some majors and helpful in others. For example an art major could be trying to come up with an idea of what to draw, design, etc. but won't get a clear idea until he/she doesn't focus on it and essentially procrastinates. Similarly a biology student could wait all week to study for a test she has on Friday and ends up failing because of her procrastination.

    1. Procrastination is a subject that is often debatable among many because many people work better under pressure. In my experience I have usually received the same grades on something after procrastinating than if I had taken my time working on it. Because of this I find your question interesting. You should ask instead if we should stop procrastinating or not, since the grade is usually the same, because that way you don't leave the question open for someone to ask on how exactly procrastination benefits us. The question will simply say that your going to receive the good grade regardless.
